There is no doubt that Arkansas has earned its name as the Natural State. It’s dotted with so many incredible gems including unique rock formations, scenic overlooks, and of course, beautiful waterfalls. Many of these cascades are situated inside the Ozarks, and hiking to them can become a strenuous task. But there are a few waterfalls, where the hike is short and sweet. One includes Fern Falls, which is a pretty waterfall in Arkansas, and you’ll absolutely love the rewards at the end.
Tucked away inside the Ozarks near the tiny town of Jasper is Fern Falls. It’s a picturesque cascade right off Scenic Byway 7.
Christopher Johnson/AllTrails The trailhead is accessible from the street, so you’ll have no issues locating it.
In fact, the trailhead begins at the Scenic 7 Byway sign approximately 11 miles south of the Jasper square.
Matt Sanford/AllTrails There is no designated parking area, but there is a grassy spot where you can pull off and safely park.
The trailhead begins behind the sign, just look for the markers shown below.
Gez Rogers/AllTrails The 1.5-mile out-and-back trail is considered an easy trek. It’s mostly flat and easy to follow. This means it’s great for kids as well as for the fur baby, who is required to be on a leash.
Along the way, you’ll be delighted to see the wildflowers as well as the canopy of trees that surround the area.
Gez Rogers/AllTrails Not to mention that during the warmer months, you’ll see lots of ferns growing on the trail as well as around the falls. It’s safe to assume that this is how the waterfall got its name.
Additionally, you’ll encounter flowing streams and creeks including the East Fork Shop Creek that feeds the waterfall.
Kyle Reeder/AllTrails The trail is not well marked, but it’s easy to follow because it’s well traversed. It’s a good idea to bring your camera as you’ll want to stop and take a few pics along the way.
Once you arrive at the cascade, you’ll be blown away by its beauty. And the short but sweet hike is as pretty as can be.
Chris Anderson/AllTrails The 42-foot waterfall flows over a bluff, then bounces off the edge of a grotto and plunges into a gorgeous emerald pool below.
If you visit after a good rain shower, the views from the top of the falls will blow you away.
Daniel Ward/AllTrails You’ll agree that Fern Falls is one of the prettiest places to explore in Arkansas.
And of course, it’s always an extra treat when you can walk behind a waterfall.
ashley dickson/Google But be careful as it can be a bit slippery, but the rewards are so worth the adventure.
Typically, Fern Falls is flowing, but if it’s not, the area is still worth exploring. The grotto, the plunge pool as well as the surrounding trees make it one of the most picturesque hikes in the Ozarks.
