If you want a taste of classic California style, beauty, and history, then this is a trip you absolutely must to experience. SR-27, otherwise known as Topanga Canyon Blvd, is a drive through California culture and musical history. During the 60s and 70s, the canyon was filled with the sounds of various musicians jamming together and even recording songs that so many know and love.

Neil Young recorded “After The Gold Rush” here, Canned Heat wrote “Going Up The Country”, and many others like Linda Ronstadt, Jim Morrison, and Woody Guthrie were often found here as well as icons like Mick Fleetwood, Alice Cooper, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, Eagles, and so many others. Plus, the area is absolutely beautiful. Make a playlist of these artists and listen while you drive while imagining what it was like during those days for a truly magical experience.

After a leisurely drive through this gorgeous, historic area, stop at Topanga State Park where many trailheads meet, and hike trails that have awe-inspiring views of the canyon all the way to the sea.

This is Southern California at its best. A winding road through a lovely canyon where you can see for miles.

As you wend your way down the winding road, there are areas where the canyon is tight-knit and you’re surrounded by high desert canyon walls before it opens up again to reveal another valley vista.

Many of the hikes converge a Trippet Ranch and like the drive that got you here, alternate between narrow canyons and wide open views. Many marine fossils can be found here as well as intriguing geological formations.

Take in a spectacular sunrise or sunset along the Topanga trails. This is the largest wildland within a major city’s boundaries in the world!

What an expansive view of the city and the sea! A wonderful place for an afternoon picnic. It’s no wonder hikers return again and again to see such sights.

When you’re done hiking through the park, Topanga Canyon Blvd continues north through the city to Stoney Point Park, or south to the Pacific Coast Highway, which is itself one of the most iconic routes in California. If you want to stay overnight in Topanga Canyon, you might enjoy this funky treehouse Airbnb. There are also tons of eclectic little shops like Hidden Treasures.
