West Virginia has been the location of quite a few significant historical events, which creates a good number of legends and ghost stories. The Eastern Panhandle is said to be home to an extraordinary number of ghosts, probably due in part to the number of Civil War conflicts that took place there. One street, in particular, may be carrying some dark energy left over from those Civil War days. Are you brave enough to face this haunted road in West Virginia? West Virginia Route 901 is a 5.5-mile stretch through farmland in Berkeley County.

Google Maps Formerly known as County Route 3, locals are familiar with this short state highway. However, it has been immortalized in publications as a destination full of ghostly activity.

Several people have had disturbing encounters driving down the street late at night.

Google Maps Most, of course, enjoy peaceful country drives along this quiet stretch of road. A select few, however, have had encounters that have never left them.

Most famously, a couple was driving down the street one foggy night when the mist increased and the car came to a stop.

When the couple got out of the car to check on the fallen soldier, they saw that he had vanished.

This tale has been repeated time and time again, and it’s not an outlier in West Virginia lore by any means. Roadside lore has a certain sort of reputation in local culture… ask around and you may just uncover a legend you have yet to hear.

Others have reported similar encounters with this ghost or similar figures both along this route and others. The area wasn’t a battle site but may have been a campsite for soldiers during the Civil War. Interestingly, another local legend targets innocent drivers in the countryside, too: the Mothman legend. Purportedly, this creature has trailed behind drivers, bathing their vehicles in the shadow of his circa-twenty-foot wingspan. Are you brave enough to take on a ghost?
