By 1835, the turn-of-the-century town of Union was thriving: 400 citizens, two hotels, two tanneries, a school, two churches, and two doctors. Some of the bustling industry in Union was thanks to several natural salt springs nearby.

A stroll through the streets of Union today provides glimpses into that past: the current Romanesque-style courthouse is from 1881. Several of the local churches are from the mid-1800s, and the nearby Rehoboth Church, the oldest Protestant church west of the Allegheny Mountains, is from 1784.
