The website World Atlas issued its annual report of the 10 safest cities in the U.S., and it should be no surprise at all that the Maple State not only landed a spot on the list; it garnered a place near the top! Here’s more on why our beloved Vermont is one of the safest states in the U.S.

World Atlas took several factors into account when creating its list.

SnapsterMax/flickr In addition to crime and accident rates, the organization looked at the odds of a state being involved in a natural disaster, workplace safety, home and community stability, and states’ emergency readiness. Overall financial security was also a factor.

Vermont is ranked as the second safest state in the entire nation!

Jasperdo/flickr The Maple State ranked particularly well in the home and community stability category. It’s also unlikely to suffer a natural disaster. Natural disasters in Vermont are rare, and typically seen in snow falls like nor’easters and general winter weather. In addition, Vermont has a very low rate of physical assaults, a low rate of unemployment (just 3.6%) and a low number of residents without health insurance. In short…Vermont is basically an awesome place to live!

Not only is Vermont gorgeous, but its workers are also safe.

Nicholas Erwin/flickr Vermont got high marks due to its great track record of workplace safety. When Vermonters are safe at work, they’re able to relax in the state’s beautiful outdoors, which leads to an even higher level of emotional happiness! No wonder Vermont is one of the safest states!

All six of the states in New England are in the top ten.
