Every year as the holiday season starts to approach, Christmas markets begin to pop up all over the state. These charming, cheerful local venues often feature sweet handmade items, delicious baked goods and giftable treats, and delightful treasures and trinkets that are too tempting to pass up. We love nothing more than strolling through each and every festive street market that we can find! There’s one particularly special Christmas market in Cincinnati that you don’t want to miss this year, however. Christkindlmarkt is a German-style Christmas market hosted by Cincideutsch and it’s absolutely magical. Rich in German heritage and traditional, old-world charm, this delightful Christmas market in Ohio is one of the most unique ways to kick off the holiday season.
Editor’s Note: These photos are from when the market was in Fountain Square. The Germania Society continues to host an annual Christkindlmarkt at their property in Colerain.
In what has become a unique annual tradition, Christkindlmarkt is a one-of-a-kind Christmas celebration that takes place in Cincinnati.

The market typically takes place during the first week of November, but you’ll want to double-check the Germania Society Calendar for this year’s official dates and hours.

Within this beautiful display, you’ll find dozens of vendors housed in wonderfully recreated German cottages. It’s the perfect place to find that special, homemade gift you just can’t find in department stores!
Cincideutsch/Twitter You’ll also have the opportunity to sip and enjoy hot chocolate, warm Glühwein (mulled wine), soul-warming traditional German foods, and cold beer, of course!
German Christmas carols ring out over the square, spreading traditional holiday cheer for all to hear. Meanwhile, the crisp scent of cloves, cinnamon, star anise, and citrus fills the air - it definitely smells like Christmas in Ohio!

You might even get to catch a demonstration or two, such as glass-making. It’s a great way to learn about this unique part of Ohio’s history and maybe even a piece of your own heritage.

You definitely don’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind Christmas market in Cincinnati. Travel and Leisure magazine has recognized Christkindlmarkt as one of “America’s Best Christmas Markets,” and we absolutely agree!

Christmas Markets in Ohio November 04, 2022 Jennifer What are the best Christmas towns in Ohio? Cincinnati may be the official home of Ohio’s Christkindlmarkt, but there are plenty of other places in Ohio to get into the holiday spirit. Lights, holiday festivals, and ice carving competitions, are just a few ways that we like to enjoy the season! These charming Christmas towns in Ohio offer a little taste of everything when it comes to the holidays, but don’t forget to visit Chagrin Falls as well - this festive town really gets its glow on during the Christmas season! Or, if you feel like walking through Ohio’s own version of a Hallmark movie (and who doesn’t??), Portsmouth is the place to be. In between small town explorations, grab the whole family and check out one of Ohio’s biggest and brightest light displays too. It’s won quite a few awards! Can I ride the Polar Express in Ohio? Nothing exudes Christmas magic quite like a train ride through a sea of colorful Christmas lights. Especially if that train happens to be making a stop at the North Pole! For the kids, this quaint quarter-sized train runs through the sweetest light display. Or, Cuyaghoga’s Christmas train is just one of Ohio’s coolest holiday activities that the whole family can enjoy.
