South Dakota is home to some of the country’s most incredible landmarks, but did you know that the Mount Rushmore State was also home to one of our generation’s most outstanding journalists? That’s right: The one and only Tom Brokaw was born and raised in a charming small town right here in South Dakota:

Welcome to Webster: A town of nearly 2,000 that was once home to Tom Brokaw and his family.

Growing up, Brokaw’s father worked as a construction foreman for the Army Corps of Engineers before moving on to the Black Hills Ordnance Depot, a job that moved the family around South Dakota through Tom’s childhood and adolescence.

By the time Tom started high school, the family had settled in Yankton, where Brokaw attended high school and, later, the University of South Dakota.

Incorporated in 1895, Webster is home to nearly 2,000 residents and is billed as being a “Destination for the Great Outdoors” as the northeast town is surrounded by wide open spaces and some of the state’s best hunting and fishing.

In addition to its impressive outdoor recreation, Webster is also home to ample museums, unique shopping and restaurants, and special events.

While he may have grown up in Webster, Brokaw’s South Dakota roots run even deeper, as his great-grandfather, Richard P. Brokaw, founded the town of Bristol.
