A visit to Wonder Falls on the Big Sandy Creek near Bruceton Mills will remind you yet again exactly why West Virginia earned the nickname “Almost Heaven.”

Brown Sugar/Google Maps It’s a beautiful spot: peaceful and majestic.

But it’s a little tricky to reach.

Patrick Roberts/Google Maps It’s located 1 mile downstream from the Rockville Bridge, where Mt Nebo Road crosses Big Sandy Creek. On a hot summer day, the best way to reach it is by wading down along the creek bed.

It’s a pleasant walk: Big Sandy Creek is one of the cleanest rivers in Preston County, and you’ll find many enjoyable pools along the way down the river bed.

Amanda Toi/Google Maps There is limited road access to the falls, but it’s an extremely rough road that requires four-wheel drive or even an ATV to complete, plus you’ll still have to scramble down to the falls on foot.

Once you arrive at the falls, you’ll quickly realize that all the effort you put into getting here was worth it.

Brown Sugar/Google Maps Take in the mountain views while you soak in the calm water above the falls or enjoy the white water below.

There are also plenty of smooth stone perches for picnicking and basking in the sun.

Amanda Toi/Google Maps Bring a book or just enjoy a little quiet meditation time in nature.

Just so you know, you may have to share the river.

Jennifer Damon/Google Maps It’s a popular spot for kayakers eager to experience the rush of the falls.

If you do find your way to Wonder Falls WV, please clean up after yourself when you leave! Part of the wonder of the falls is how clean and pristine they are, due partly to their remoteness and difficulty to access. We want to keep them that way!
